Whistler Mountain opened in February, 1966, with a double chairlift (the Red Chair), a T-bar and a gondola lift. The new mountain won instant acclaim for its huge alpine area, vertical drop and good snow conditions. The only problem was the road (a dirt logging track), which was only plowed on Saturday. This was a detriment of Friday travelers.

The mountain expanded very soon and added the Green and Blue chairlifts in the year 1970, as well as a the Roundhouse, a mountaintop lodge.

The town in the valley had to expand as well because the number of visitors was rapidly increasing.
A plan was made very soon, and the Alta Lake village was incorporated into the Resort of Whistler in the year 1975.
The new government, initiated the construction of Whistler Village immediately, and so the Whistler village opened in 1980.

The next major project was in the year 1986, when the Peak Chair to the Whistler Mountain summit was built. This new lift revolutionized skiing on the Whistler Mountain, allowing the access to North Americas largest alpine ski area.

In 2000 the Black Chair was replaced with a high-speed quad which is called the Garbanzo Chair, and the Fitzsimmons Chair was added. The bottom of the Garbanzo and the top of Fitzsimmons are more or less located in the Gondola Olympic station area.

Since the year 1997 Whistler and Blackcomb, which were previously separate ski areas, have been integrated into one mega-resort when Intrawest completed the addition of theneighboring Whistler Mountain to their ownership.
